PARKERSBURG — The YMCA of Parkersburg will hold its annual Indoor Triathlon on March 12 and 13.

The Indoor Triathlon pits newbies and veterans in swimming, biking and running competitions and is a modified version of a regular triathlon in which there are no fixed distances that must be completed.

Participants compete at the speeds they are comfortable with, for as far a distance as they can within the fixed time periods.

This year’s Indoor Triathlon has three divisions, Youth 12-17, Adult 18-59 and Senior 60 and over. Competition is in one-hour timed segments of lap swimming, stationary cycling and treadmill running.

Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to males and females of each division who earn the most completed laps and longest distances overall, for a total of 18 medals.

To maintain social distancing, each competition time permits a maximum of four people. Times are reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants must select a time interval on one of the four days in the contest:

* March 12: 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m.

* March 13: 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Participants who register by Feb. 23 will receive a free T-shirt. Also included in the registration is an eight-week training program with YMCA Personal Trainer Michaela Piendel. YMCA members also will receive a free 30-minute Triathlon training consultation.

The entry fee for the Indoor Triathlon is the same for all divisions. YMCA members receive a discounted rate of $24 while the fee for non-members is $30. To register, go to parkersburgymca.org or in-person at 1800 30th St.

The YMCA safeguards the health of all by implementing CDC recommendations and health department guidelines. Event protocols include:

* Participants will be split into “sessions” (1-hour intervals) to limit the number of participants and spectators using the pool, stationary bikes and treadmills at one time. The sessions will be limited to 4 participants.

* Bottled water and pre-packaged snacks will be provided.

* All equipment will be sanitized between each use.

* Spectators will be limited to immediate family and remain socially-distanced from other family groupings.

* Hand sanitizer will be readily available at all event locations.
