BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Mariners volleyball team adds Clayon Wilson to the coaching staff ahead of this upcoming season. Wilson is a native of Lake City Florida and brings head coaching experience to the team.

“We are happy to welcome Clayon Wilson to the department and our volleyball coaching staff. Coach Every has taken time to carefully consider potential assistant coaches to add to the volleyball staff,” said Athletics Director Dr. William Carlton. “After an extensive search, Clay Wilson is just the right person to join her staff. Coach Wilson brings a strong volleyball background having served as volleyball head coach at Florida Gateway College along with a strong recruiting base in Florida. Coach Wilson’s background as a head coach and her recruiting experience will be tremendously important to both the short-term and long-term success of our volleyball program. We expect that she will make significant contributions to our team.”

Wilson was the head coach at Florida Gateway College where she snapped a two-season losing record and had seven athletes finish in the top-25 for statistical categories including digs, blocks per set and assists. Wilson also understands the importance of success off the court as her team finished with the college’s highest GPA (3.2) and had five athletes make the NJCAA All-Academic Team.

“I learned at FGC that creating the right team culture is key to your success.  Everyone has to be on the same page to get the results that you want” Wilson said of her time at FGC. “FGC also created a space for me to build great connections in the volleyball community and that is so important in regards to recruiting.”

Over the years, Wilson has had the opportunity to volunteer coach with Team Florida Indoor High-Performance Volleyball, host numerous clinics in underserved areas, coach nationally ranked indoor teams and recently mentor with the Big 10 Volleyball Conference under their Diversity and Networking Program.

Before she got into coaching, Wilson was a player herself. Wilson began her collegiate volleyball career at Southern Connecticut State University and graduated from Dillard University in New Orleans, LA.

Scholarship has been important to Wilson for a long time. While at Dillard she worked with the Gulf Coast Atlantic Conference (GCAC) as a published writer, assisting with Track & Field and Basketball conference tournaments and was named an Athletic Ambassador for her work with the Sports Information Director and Athletic Director. Wilson also has a degree in psychology and was awarded the highest level of achievement in the department. She is currently pursuing her Master’s in sports coaching and psychology.

Attention to detail is something that Wilson focuses on when coaching. She believes everything you do from how you walk into the gym to how you land after jumping matters.

“The small things matter.  How you land, how you turn your wrist, how you move your arm, what do you think when you first walk into practice, what do you feel when you hear certain affirmations or comments? The little things build up to the big things,” said Wilson.

Wilson is excited about her journey at Coastal Georgia to begin as the season is set to begin in just a few weeks.

“I am excited to move into a different conference and help continue the tradition of winning that Coastal is known for, said Wilson. “I am beyond excited to work with Coaches Valery [Every] and …….
