Toronto Catholic students must be vaccinated for indoor extracurricular sports – Toronto Star

Toronto’s Catholic high school students will need to be fully vaccinated if they want to play indoor sports.

The move, announced via email to parents Thursday, follows a similar requirement by the Toronto public board to mandate shots for students who want to play high-contact sports including basketball and hockey.

“We know how important extracurricular activities are to a student’s health and well-being and their overall school experience,” the Toronto Catholic District School Board said in its email, adding “staff have been working over the past several months to gradually re-introduce extracurricular activities including some school sports and teams.

“We are writing to inform you that in consultation with Toronto Public Health we will be moving forward with requiring all secondary students to be fully vaccinated to participate in indoor extracurricular activities involving teams/groups from other schools (inter-school activities) … This vaccination requirement will apply to extracurricular sports/teams/activities where there is competition between schools, mixing with students from other schools and travel to other schools or external venues.”

For students playing intramural sports or taking part in school-based clubs, vaccination is urged but not required, the board says.

The province had previously announced a voluntary, rapid testing program for unvaccinated athletes and coaches before taking part in indoor sports.
