Sports Briefs: UAlbany wins Commissioner’s Cup – The Daily Gazette – The Daily Gazette

The University at Albany won the 2021-22 America East Stuart P. Haskell Commissioner’s Cup, awarded annually to the conference’s top-performing athletic department. 

The Great Danes earned the Cup for the eighth time overall and first since the 2017-18 season, behind four America East titles and five runners-up performances. 

The Commissioner’s Cup is determined by a scoring system under which programs earn points for their team’s performances, both during the regular season and in the conference tournaments for each of the league’s sponsored sports. 

UAlbany earned 380 points, followed by runner-up Vermont with 331, and third-place UMBC with 284.  The rest of the finishers were UMass Lowell (269), New Hampshire (264), Binghamton (263), Stony Brook (256), Maine (198), NJIT (152) and Hartford (118).

During the 2021-22 academic year, the Great Danes won league titles in women’s basketball, women’s indoor track & field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

CODDINGTON EARNS EMPIRE 8 HONOR

Russell Sage College junior John Coddington, a Broadalbin-Perth graduate, was voted the Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Year.

Coddington won the hammer throw at the E8 Championships with a toss of 45.93 meters. The school’s first E8 champion also placed third in the shot put with a throw of 14.16 meters.

Coddington, the team captain who also represented the program on the E8 Sportsmen of the Year Team, competed at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Championships in both events.  He established program records in the hammer, shot put and discus across his debut spring.

UALBANY PUTS THREE WOMEN ON NATIONAL TEAMS

Three members of the University at Albany women’s lacrosse program have earned spots on their nation’s final rosters ahead of the 2022 World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship.  Assistant coach Taylor Frink and outgoing senior attack Ivy Santana made the Haudenosaunee roster, and rising junior attack Bryar Hogg will represent Canada. 

The World Championship begins June 29, with the championship match scheduled for July 9.  The tournament will take place at Towson University in Maryland.  The field is composed of 30 teams divided into six five-team pools.

ESPN will broadcast 112 games of the World Championship, including six on its linear networks.

Frink graduated UAlbany in 2011, leaving the program with 89 goals, 82 assists, and 171 points. Santana had four goals and three assists in 12 games this season, while Hogg totaled nine goals and eight assists.

PATROONS HOST ATLANTIC CITY ON FRIDAY

After a Game 1 loss to Atlantic City Tuesday in the TBL’s Northeast Division finals, the Albany Patroons host Game 2 in the best-of-three series at 7 p.m. Friday at the Washington Avenue Armory.

If Albany wins Friday, Game 3 will be at 7 p.m. Saturday. The winner of this series advances to the Eastern Conference finals against either the Huntsville Hurricanes or the Tallahassee Southern Kings.

The Patroons won all three regular-season meetings against Atlantic City, with two of those coming at the Armory.

UNION EARNS ECAC MEN’S LACROSSE HONORS

Union College men’s lacrosse head coach Derek Witheford was named the ECAC Division III Coach of the Year to lead five total Union College honorees on the annual All-ECAC Men’s Lacrosse Teams.
