Sports briefs: Section II athletes head to indoor track and field nationals – The Daily Gazette – The Daily Gazette

Section II will be well-represented this weekend during the New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships at the Armory New Balance Track and Field Center in New York.

Athletes from more than a dozen Section II programs are entered for the national event, which starts Friday and runs through Sunday.

Double state champion sprinter Zionna Perez-Tucker of Mohonasen is set to compete in the championship division of the girls’ 60-meter and 200-meter dash. Fellow state champion Carter Cukerstein of Shenendehowa will run in the boys’ 60-meter dash. Gianna Locci of Stillwater, a state champion in the girls’ long jump, will compete in the championship division of that event and the triple jump, as well as in the Rising Stars 60-meter dash.

Other individuals competing in the boys’ Championship division are La Salle’s Gitch Hayes (1-mile, 2-mile), Jack Foster of Saratoga Springs (shot put), Alessandro Saltsman of Fonda-Fultonville (weight throw) and Baden Seabury of Ichabod Crane (200 meters). Individual entrants in girls’ Championship events are Mia Paolino of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (2-mile), Kelly Moran of Stillwater (long jump, triple jump), Erin Boler of Niskayuna (5,000 meters), Kaleigh Higgins of Shaker (5,000 meters) and Uchenna Uba of Ravena-Coeyemans-Selkirk (weight throw).

Shenendehowa entered three relays in the boys’ Championship division, with Cukerstein, Tyler Dedrick, Jason Gillan and Michael McElrath in the 4×200 and the foursome of Michael Clay, Jason Colindres, Andre Adonnino and Nathan Brimhall running in both the 4×800 and the distance medley relay. Brimhall was sixth in the 3,200 meters at the state championships, and the 4×800 relay was second. Also competing in a Championship relay is the Columbia distance medley team of Jacob Yannone, Evan Farnan, Carter Norton and Nathan Davis.

Competing in Rising Stars events are Niskayuna’s Boler (girls’ 2-mile), Stillwater’s Kara Moran (girls’ long jump, triple jump), Scotia-Glenville’s Tyler Greene (boys’ 2-mile), Columbia’s Davis (boys’ 1-mile), Shaker’s Leonni Griffin (girls’ 800), Saratoga Springs’ Ryan Bush (boys’ 1-mile), Hoosic Valley’s Katherine Rose (girls’ race walk), Ichabod Crane’s Seabury (boys’ 60) and Colonie’s Duanena Graves (girls’ shot put).

Colonie will enter three Rising Stars relays — the boys’ sprint medley with Connor Ploof, Jordan Goddard, Benjamin Ross and Frank Prevratil; the girls’ sprint medley with Gabriella Villa, Rachel Garzone, Mia Van Dyke and Emma Gepfert; and the boys’ 4×400 with Owen Conley, Dylan Fox, Aidan Norris and Savion Navedo.

Entries in the Freshman division include Shaker’s Charlotte Dunkel in the girls’ 1-mile, and the Saratoga Springs duo of Owen Blaisdell in the boys’ 800 and Darren Pasek in the boys’ 1-mile.

RSC’S CODDINGTON HONORED

ALBANY — John Coddington, a junior of the Russell Sage College indoor track and field team, was named to the 2022 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region Team. To do so, an athlete must be one of the top-five individuals in their event in their respective region.

Coddington, a Broadalbin-Perth High School graduate, was the Empire 8 runner-up in both the shot put and the weight throw, establishing school records in both events during the winter. A 2022 Empire 8 All-Conference Second Team pick, Coddington is Russell Sage’s first All-Region performer. He finished second in the shot put and fourth in the weight throw in the Mideast Region.
