But there are concerns about the impact on health and wellbeing of maintaining the government guidance “against indoor activities where physical distancing cannot be maintained, including non-professional adult contact sports”.

There is no such ban in England, and details from Sport Scotland show a list of sports that face effective bans or limitations.

They include indoor football, basketball, boxing, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, karate, netball, squash and volleyball.

Amateur leagues have been suspended by governing bodies due to the advice.

But some sports have negotiated limited exemptions such as ice hockey, where participants can take part in “non-contact” training.

A sports industry source said that most governing bodies were not significantly opposed to the three weeks of restrictions which partly covered the quiet festive period.

But the insider said: “If these curbs go on, there is scope for growing frustration.”

Scottish Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton said: “These activities offer an enormous boost to people both mentally and physically so if there is an opportunity for these long-suspended sports to be brought back then I would urge the First Minister to do so.

“We will be dealing with the impact of the pandemic on people’s health and their lifestyles for many years to come.

Encouraging people back into sport is going to be all the more important as we look ahead to the future.”
