Smith, Dowuona discuss loss in Cameron Indoor – 247Sports

DURHAM, N.C. – The NC State men’s basketball team fell to 2-5 in ACC play Saturday at Duke, falling to the Blue Devils 88-73 in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Pack hung around for a while and showed some fight late, but couldn’t overcome No. 8 Duke in a game where the Blue Devils outscored the Pack 58-38 in the paint. Terquavion Smith and Dereon Seabron led the Pack once again, with Smith scoring 19 and Seabron recording a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Ebenezer Dowuona chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds, all on the offensive end, but Duke proved to be too much inside for the Pack.

Following the loss, Smith and Dowuona spoke with members of the media.

Here is what they had to say:

Terquavion Smith

On if Duke changed something defensively in the second half

No, not really. We just weren’t hitting shots. We were putting up a lot of shots, but we just couldn’t hit. I felt like it was just us not making it.

On the challenge of playing a team like Duke with so much depth and talent

Honestly, to me, it’s really not a challenge because I’m a confident person. I bring energy myself. So, I like when the other team is high ranked or whatever. I don’t feel like that was a problem.

On playing in Cameron Indoor

It was a great environment. Good vibes. A lot of people. It was loud in here. It was everything I expected.

On what changed for NC State during its good run late

We started going downhill, and we started stacking stops on defense. If you stack stops on defense, everything else works.

On Duke’s size

It really wasn’t tough. That’s where the heart comes in at. Heart over height is a motto I go by.

Ebenezer Dowuona

On what Duke did well inside

I don’t know what. Really, I thought it was our defense. I thought we relaxed a little bit on defense. We’ve just got to lock in a little bit. I felt like we slacked a little bit, that was really it.

On Mark Williams

He’s a good athlete. He’s got size. I just feel like what makes him a good player is his size.

On getting into foul trouble

It was tough. I wasn’t expecting that. I came in with three put backs, and I was expecting to bring more energy to the team. And then the two fouls came in. It is what it is. But Jaylon [Gibson] came in and did his job.

On NC State’s late run

It’s all mentality. We’ve got to keep going regardless of whether we’re winning or losing. I felt that was where our energy came from. We were down by a lot, and we came back to cut it to nine.
