CINCINNATI — East Liverpool’s boys tennis doubles team of senior Cole Dailey and junior Preston Dawson showed up ready to play in the Div. II state tournament on Friday.

Unfortunately the pair did not get to play on the Lindner Family Tennis Center professional courts as an impending inclement weather forecast pushed action indoors to the Five Seasons Sports Club in Cincinnati.

The Potter duo’s stay was short as they lost 6-4, 6-1 to the Gates Mills Hawken freshmen duo of Zach Forte and Axel Neeley.

Dailey and Dawson were the second place team from the combined East/Southeast district, while Forte and Neeley finished third at the Northeast district.

Dawson and Dailey ended up fairing much better that the East/Southeast district champion Waylon Lamerson and Caden Mibert of Waverly. That team was swept 6-0, 6-0 by Pepper Pike Orange’s Ace Bloom and Krish Mehra, a fourth-place finisher at the Northeast district.

Preston Dawson was making his second appearance at the state tournament as he paired with Norman Butler last season. Dawson and Butler lost 6-0, 6-0 to Lexington’s Karl Etzel and Ethan Remy last season.

That pair did return to the state tournament this season, but Remy played singles and lost in the first round. Etzel teamed with Tommy Secrist in doubles competition. That team won the Northwest district title but was upset 7-5, 6-2 by Cincinnati Seven Hills’ John Corbett and Ethan Blatt in the first round on Friday.
