Odisha CM reviews progress of India’s first indoor athletic stadium project in Bhubaneswar – India Today

Donning a sports jersey, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday visited the project site of India’s first indoor athletic stadium in Kalinga Stadium complex, in Bhubaneswar. He inspected the work site and expressed his satisfaction with the progress.

Talking to the media, Patnaik said, “This indoor athletic facility will be a major boost for the development of athletics in India and will become the hub to create champions in coming years.”

The facility is complete with a residential facility for more than 100 athletes for full-time coaching. It can potentially host national and international indoor athletic events.

The stadium is being built at a cost of Rs 120 crores and will be ready this year. This is the first indoor athletics in the country and will help athletes practice throughout the year.

Also, a tennis centre is being constructed for hosting national and international events. The center will have all the facilities to conduct the ITF tournaments, Davis Cup etc.

Projects worth over Rs 300 crores are under construction in the Kalinga Stadium, including the indoor athletics stadium, indoor aquatics stadium, tennis centre, staff accommodation and Hockey HPC building.

While, the indoor athletic stadium and the tennis centre are both part of the Sports Infrastructure Development Project which aims at transformative changes in the sports sector in Odisha, under the 5T initiative of the State Government.

The CM was accompanied by 5T Secretary V K Pandian and Sports Secretary R Vineel Krishna and they were seen elucidating minute details about the progress in construction works.

Patnaik also took time to watch an ongoing football match of Odisha Women’s Football League at the main football ground of Kalinga Stadium. He interacted with women footballers and assured them all support for their football career.

Later, Patnaik met the Indian Hockey teams (Men and Women) at the Hockey Stadium. He enquired about their stay and practice facilities. The players — in turn, expressed their gratitude for the support CM Patnaik has extended for hockey development.

The Chief Minister wished them good luck for the upcoming Pro League matches and assured them all support and hoped that India would win medals in the Asian and Commonwealth Games this year.
