Indoor sports commitment for growing Geelong suburb – Bay 93.9

Labor’s promised to contribute $6 million towards building a ‘high ball’ centre at Armstorng Creek if it wins the federal election.

Corangamite MP Libby Coker was joined by Labor Senator Penny Wong at Iona College on Thursday morning, announcing the commitment to build the facility capable of hosting basketball, netball, badminton and volleyball state and regional tournaments.

Geelong United Basketball CEO Mark Neeld was pleased to see a commitment to indoor sports, particularly basketball and netball ahead of the election.

“All of the indoor sports community within the Geelong region are really excited about it,” he said.

“It’s been a very long time, we’ve been doing a lot of work on this project.

“One of the things we found out was that the last time any correspondence went from the City of Greater Geelong to the sports of netball and basketball was 1989 and we’ve never got this far to have in a federal election, a promise if elected at $6 million.”

Mr. Neeld said that it’s the Geelong indoor sports community’s turn to cash-in, with other regional cities reaping the benefits of upgraded and new indoor facilities.

“This announcement will also hopefully work with the state government and the City of Greater Geelong with all the sports combined to hopefully see some shovels in the ground so we can have our own regional indoor sports facility,” he said.

Ms Coker said he facility would help to address the lag in sporting and community infrastructure in Armstrong Creek.

“This is a really exciting project and a milestone in the development of the township of Armstrong Creek,” she said.

“It will make up part of the character of Armstrong Creek for years to come into the future.

“It will be a place where hundreds of local families, the kids and the mums and dads, come together, meet each other and make friendships.

“That’s the great thing about community sports and why I’m so keen to support these projects.

“The facility will also be a host facility for regional and possibly statewide tournaments where kids can see the elite players and get inspired.”
