High School Indoor Track Season Kicks Off At Houghton – Jamestown Post Journal

HOUGHTON — Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph’s Devin Austin, Collin Risk and Chas Sundquist as well as Fredonia/Westfield’s Ledreth Velez-Olmo and Matt Linder all picked up first-place finishes during season-opening indoor track at Houghton College’s Kerr-Pegula Field House on Saturday.

Austin won the high jump (6-1) and triple jump (42-3) while taking second in the long jump (19-10.75); Risk captured the 55-meter dash (6.96) and Sundquist claimed the weight throw (26-11).

Velez-Olmo won the 300 meters with a sectional qualifying time of 38.08 and Linder took first in the long jump with a sectional qualifying distance of 19-10.75.

Salamanca’s Jillian Rea won the shot put with a toss of 28-3.5 in the Warriors’ first-ever indoor meet.

F/MG/CV/F/R’s Kaden Dove was second in the shot put (31-6), Zayne Cline was second in the 55-meter hurdles (10.28) and Rylee Gore was second in the 600 meters (1:57.91).

Velez-Olmo was second in the 55 meters (7.1) and teammate Gigi Ferro was second in the high jump (4-6).

Third-place finishes for F/MG/CV/F/R were turned in by Jacob Constantino in the 300 meters (39.27), Talon Rowland in the 600 meters (1:39.88), Juvenal Diaz in the 1,000 meters (3:04.89), Joe Krenzer in the 1,600 meters (4:59.12), Cline in the high jump (4-10) and Corinna Inkley in the long jump (13-9).

For Fredonia/Westfield, Lenieth Velez-Olmo was third in the 55-meter hurdles (10.57).

“It was good to be back in action after missing last year. Both as a team and as individuals, we really needed to get a meet under our belts,” Fredonia/Westfield head coach Tom Stokes said. “These early meets are always a good measure of where we are and what we need to work on. The kids did great and competed well. Hopefully, each will continue to improve over the course of the season.”

In fourth place for Fredonia/Westfield was the 800-meter relay team of Ledreth Velez-Olmo, Owen Casserta, Lenieth Velez-Olmo and Carson Kuzdal, who finished in 1:48.32, Ashlynn Ambrose in the 600 meters (2:02.28) and Katherine Fortna in the triple jump (25-7).

Linder was fifth in the 300 meters (39.95) and Clayton Frazier was fifth in the long jump (15-8.5); Kuzdal was sixth in the 55-meter hurdles (11.04), Abbey Lauer was sixth in the high jump (4-4) and Gigi Gullo was sixth in the shot put (22-5.5); Frazier was seventh in the 600 meters (1:47) and Mariella Russo was seventh in the high jump (4-2); and ninth-place finishes were turned in by Matt Brown in the 600 meters (1:48) and Haley Zadzilka in the 1,500 meters (6:14.91).

Other finishers for Salamanca were Myra Breazeale, who took fourth in the weight throw (20-4) and fifth in the shot put (22-9.5); the 1,600-meter relay team of Harley Brown, Ryanna Brady, Sierra Haynoski and Aliya Lee, who took sixth in 5:19.09; Rae took seventh in the weight throw (18-2.5); Brown was seventh in the 55-meter hurdles (11.79); Summer Downey was seventh in the 55 meters (9.0); and Brady was eighth in the 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters with times of 6:17.33 and 13:17.36, respectively.
