Gruczka, Mooney lead Stonington to Class S boys’ indoor track and field title – theday.com

New Haven — Stonington rode big individual performances by juniors Ryan Gruczka and Josh Mooney to win the CIAC Class S boys’ indoor track and field championship on Saturday night at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

Gruczka and Mooney each won an individual event and place second in another, while Gruczka anchored Stonington’s winning 4×800-meter relay team as the Bears held on to beat perennial state power Bloomfield 56-53.

Gruczka won the 1,000 in 2:35.20, finished second in the 3,200 in 10:00.22, and joined Oliver Cooke, Jason Morse and Ryan Orr on the winning 4×800 relay (8:33.24).

Mooney won the 55 hurdles in 7.60 seconds, placed second in the 55 dash (6.63) and fifth in the 300 (38.41).

Orr added a second (behind Gruczka) in the 1,000, finishing in 2:37.35.

The only other local place-winner was Lyman Memorial’s 4×200 relay team of Jeremiah Bobbi, Daylan Griffin, Jacob Palombizio and Gregory Touissaint, which finished fifth in 1:38.75.

In the girls’ meet, Stonington’s Nancy Inthasit won a state title in the 55 dash with a time of 7.35 seconds, lifting the Bears to a fifth-place finish with 33 points. Bloomfield won the title with 92.

Inthasit also ran a leg of the Stonington’s winning 1,600 sprint medley relay team, joining Hannah Anderson, Helena Hoinsky and Iliana Rashlieigh to win gold in 4:27.13.

The Bears also placed in two other relays — the 4×200 team of Inthasit, Maya Terwilliger, Carly Constantine and Anderson (fourth, 1:52.32) and the 4×800 team of Isabella de Castro, Hoinsky, Alexa Williams and Rashlieigh (sixth, 11:00.51), while Olivia Habarek added a second in the shot put (32-1.5).

Other local place-winners were Old Lyme’s Madeleine Morgado in the 1,000 (second, 3:19.11) and Agatha Hunt in the 1,600 (fifth, 5:44.86), Lyman Memorial’s Kristen Goodrich in the high jump (4-10) and Montville’s Kate Bowman in the 1,000 (fifth, 3:20.57) and Kelsey Chiasson in the shot (sixth, 30-9.5), and St. Bernard’s Payton Lowe (third, 31-11.25) and Lindsey Riley (fourth, 31-9.5) in the shot.
