NEWTON FALLS — The board of education has entered a contract with Astro Turf Corp. for the turf to be placed at the planned $3.1 million athletic complex.

School officials say they are hopeful that work will be done this spring and summer with the complex’s first phase to be completed by early September.

Superintendent Rocco Adduci said the synthetic turf installation is part of the first phase. The turf will be placed at the football and various fields.

Phase one also includes the lighting at the stadium and work at the track.

Adduci said the project is expected to be done by the third game of the 2022 football season. School officials have been planning improvements and upgrades to the complex since last year.

John Crowder, director of business operations, said the district first is focusing on installation of the synthetic turf at the complex’s three playing fields. He said LED lighting is being planned to save on energy costs.

There also will be new bleachers, additional seating by home bleachers for season-ticket holders, a new sidewalk around the complex and a new band shelter. Drainage tiles will be placed under the fields.

Crowder said the entire $3.1 million complex will be protected by an 18-foot-high fence.

Crowder said Austintown Fitch also has a synthetic turf field and makes money by renting it to groups and organizations — something he said Newton Falls also could do.

School officials have looked at athletic complexes in Massillon, Austintown and Alliance as they plan for the district’s complex.

Adduci said the district also is looking at the second phase, which would include building a 25,000-square-foot facility for athletic training and indoor sports.

He said there will be a golf simulator, basketball courts, and areas for practicing baseball and softball.

“It will be fabulous for us to have this. It will be right next to the softball field,” Adduci said.

He said an estimate on the building will be determined.

The second phase is set to be completed in 2023.

The district is working with Phillips Sekanick Architects on the project.

In other action, the board approved new tankless water heaters for the junior / senior high school at $79,000, which was covered by insurance. Adduci said the district had two large tanks for 35 years that needed replaced after being damaged in a fire.
