Duke basketball: Mike Krzyzewski previews final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium – 247Sports

Mike Krzyzewski has just one more game on the docket this regular season. The Duke head coach is retiring at the end of the season and the Blue Devils conclude the schedule against North Carolina at home in Coach K’s final home game. Safe to say, there’s a lot of emotion going around.

Krzyzewski wanted to make sure to keep it about the players and not about himself. Although, that might be hard to tell the fans, who will surely honor him in his final home contest.

Krzyzewksi opened up on his emotions heading into his final home game when speaking on his show Basketball and Beyond on Sirius XM.

“Right? It’s very expensive,” Krzyzewski said, alluding to the ticket price of admission. “I’m glad my family already has tickets. All kidding aside, you know, it’s hard for me to believe it’s the last game and I don’t think it’ll hit me completely until that day, and maybe until I walk out on the court. I try not to let things like that (affect me). I try to stay in the moment of the game, not the moment of what the game means or meant, not to look in the future, not to look in the past. So, the fact that all these honors and nice things, mostly nice things said about you. I’ve tried to really deflect that as much as possible because these kids need the notoriety. They’re the ones who have been playing. They’ve been great. They’ve been great but going into this game, that’s one thing I want to make sure for them. Don’t try to win it for me, win it for us. That’s what we’ve done all year long. And let’s do that again.”

Despite retiring, there was some speculation Krzyzewski would stick around in an administrative type role or something along those lines. He cleared up that speculation.

“I will have nothing to do with our basketball program,” Krzyzewski said, via CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander. “This is not about me … [Things have been said] where I’m trying to maintain control. That could not be further from the truth. It was mine for 42 years, but it’s Duke’s forever.”

Krzyzewski has been the head coach of Duke since 1980. The game against the Tar Heels on Saturday will be the 97th game Krzyzewski has coached against North Carolina in his career, and he improved his record against the Tar Heels to 50-46 with an 87-67 win on the road earlier this year.

Duke is 26-4 overall and 16-3 in the ACC. The Blue Devils have clinched the ACC regular-season title for the first time since 2010. The Blue Devils are also looking to land a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament this year.
