DMR Record Climaxes Big Meet, Doug Raymond National Qualifier – Youngstown State Athletics

Climaxed by a DMR school record, the Youngstown State track and field program wrapped-up successful outings at Grand Valley State’s Big Meet and Kent State’s Doug Raymond National Qualifier with just two weeks remaining before the much-anticipated 2021-22 Horizon League Indoor Championships.

Big Meet Highlights
Clocking a time of 11:47.81, the women’s DMR squad comprised of Nicole Squatrito, Aiamyia Dudley, Natalie Fleming and Morgan Cole etched their names atop the YSU record books, setting new YSU program record in the event. Breaking down the relay, Squatrito clocked a 3:32 1200m leg, Dudley recorded a 57.5 400m leg, Fleming ran a 2:19 800m leg and Cole closed clocking a 4:57 1600m leg. The outing uplifts the former record of 11:52.21 set in 2020 and was good for a top-5 finish on the afternoon.

Not to be largely outdone, the men’s DMR team made up of Ty Coon, Ryan Laird, Evan Alten and Sean Peterson clocked the second-fastest race in program history with a time of 9:52.54 to post the eighth-quickest relay across 24 entries.

Clearing a 4.06m (13′ 3¾”) bar on her first attempt at the height, Erin Bogard took the top spot in Saturday’s women’s pole vault competition for her third event victory during the 2021-22 indoor season. Katlyn Griffie finished seventh with a 3.66m (12′ 0″) vault. Completing the event sweep for the Penguins, Elijah Nelson finished atop the leaderboard in the men’s pole vault and earned the first event win of his YSU career, clearing a personal-best 4.95m (16′ 2¾”) – a mark good for second-best in school history. Jett Murphy cleared 4.45m (14′ 7¼”) for seventh.

Making her 2021-22 indoor season debut, Ashleigh Rowley recorded a 15th-place finish in the women’s 3000m with a time of 10:38.53.

Doug Raymond National Qualifier Highlights
Acting as the only Penguin representative in the event, Derek Basinger muscled a personal-best time of 4:15.51 in the men’s mile to earn the runner-up nod in the event.

YSU took three of the top six spots in the men’s shot put competition as Dominic Perry posted a 16.97m (55′ 8¼”) throw en route a third-place nod. Following, Zach Gray’s tossed a personal-best mark of 16.64m (54′ 7¼”) for fifth and Brock Grundy threw 16.27m (53′ 4½”) for sixth.

On her fifth attempt, Molly Radcliffe threw the fifth-furthest shot put in program history with a 14.50m (47′ 7″) mark. Radcliffe’s performance was good for the sixth-furthest throw on the afternoon.

Camryn Jarrett led all Penguin finishers in the women’s high jump competition, clearing a season-best bar of 1.55m (5′ 1″) for 15th-place in the event. Two spots behind, multi event-standout Olivia Jones also posted a season-best jump, clearing 1.50m (4′ 11″).

The Penguins will head to Akron’s Al Campbell Invitational on Friday, Feb. 18, and the Kent State Tune-Up scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 19. The pair of meets act as the final tune-up prior to hosting the 2021-22 Horizon League Indoor Championships on Feb. 26-27 at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS).
