Coastal Carolina receives approval for Phase I of indoor practice facility – Charleston Post Courier

CONWAY — A week after Coastal Carolina was asked to change its funding source for a third of its indoor practice facility, it’s now all systems go.

CCU received approval from the State Fiscal Accountability Authority on June 28 and can now go ahead with Phase I of its $15 million indoor practice facility.

The facility will be primarily used for football, but will also be used for intramurals and graduations.

CCU first received approval from the Commission for Higher Education on June 2, but had to change $5 million of its funding from capital project reserve funds to auxiliary reserves at the request of the Capital Improvements Joint Bond Review Committee on June 21. The committee asked that CCU use capital project reserve funds for something academics-related instead.

A portion of tuition is designated for capital improvements, currently $505 per student per semester. Once CCU changed $5 million of its funding to auxiliary reserves, it received approval from the JBRC and SFAA.

The other $10 million for the project will come from private donations through the Chanticleer Athletic Foundation.

The Phase I design stage will be paid for with $375,000 from auxiliary reserves. The approximately 90,000-square foot facility will include a full-sized turf football field, video recording platforms, lighting and sound systems, restrooms, training rooms, and storage space.

The project is expected to result in an increase of $261,760 in years one through three in annual operating expenses. No student fees or tuition will be increased because of the project.

Per tweets from CCU president Michael T. Benson, bids for design work will go out shortly and additional approvals will be required as the university advances to the next stages.
