Chippewa Hills eyeing sports camera, streaming setup – The Pioneer

REMUS — At February’s monthly board meeting, Chippewa Hills School District’s administration expressed interest in installing and utilizing a camera and streaming system for future indoor and outdoor sports games.

The streaming service, the NFHS Network, makes streaming live and on-demand high school sports available easily and is currently utilized by both Big Rapids Public Schools and Reed City Area Public Schools. Partnered with the National Federation of State High School Associations, over 44 high school state athletic activities associations, and PlayOn! Sports, the NFHS Network is a joint venture created to provide fans with the ability to stream high school sports on any device, from wherever they are.

Board president Guy Stickler explained how the system works.

“It’s basically a company that would set up the technology portion of it, put cameras in the gyms, and then is able to broadcast the games,” Stickler said. “It’s a subscription-based service. You sign up for the annual subscription for an app for NFHS that you can (use to) watch any of those games. We can watch games from Big Rapids, Reed City.

“They said they pay all the costs as far as hooking everything up getting all their name wired in, and we just have to sign up for a five-year contract. So that’s the biggest concern is that it’s a five-year agreement. Doesn’t cost the school anything. School also doesn’t really profit anything by it, It’s just a service.”

Chippewa Hills superintendent Bob Grover said the system has worked well for other districts.

“The comment was, yes, they think it’s been okay,” Grover said. “Especially COVID, when it kicked in, and it helped people who could watch it you were at risk, or pause and resume, so grandparents and things like that.

“They said one of the schools expressed concern that, because they have the same proposal there, high school, gym, and stadium, expressed a concern that putting ahead the stadium they think to decrease their gate, because if it was cold or rainy, or anything else, I can just stay home and watch it and instead of coming and supporting it at school.”

Coach Ryan Grinnell mentioned his use of the system frequently to watch live coverage and game tape.

“As a coach, I have a subscription to it, and I can watch Reed City, especially the basketball games,” Grinnell said. “I can see Reed City play Evart or Sparta play someone that I’m playing against. I mean, it’s a great scouting tool. It’s a video tool that you can use when you can’t get out to see and you can (watch online). What schools do is they just program when the events start, and the camera starts up and tracks the ball as it as it goes.
