Bundesliga games reduced to 50 per cent capacity following new COVID-19 restrictions – The Athletic

The German government has capped attendances at Bundesliga games to a maximum of 15,000 fans or 50 per cent stadium capacity following a rise in COVID-19 cases.

Outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel and her successor Olaf Scholz have reintroduced several restrictions, including reduced capacities in outdoor and indoor sports events.

Bundesliga matches must reduce their attendance to 50 per cent capacity or only have a maximum number of 15,000 fans in the stadium in order to slow the spread of the virus. Most stadiums in Germany had been operating at nearly full capacity this season.

The government has said fans must wear masks and sports events must be cancelled in the German states where COVID-19 case rates are high.

“A temporary limit on the number of fans in the stadium is understandable,” German Football League chief Christian Seifert said.

“The DFL hopes that this decision by the federal government and the states leads to an improvement of the pandemic situation.”

On Thursday, there were more than 73,000 new infections and 388 deaths in Germany.
