‘Blessed and honored’: Don Schmeichel named a JHS Hall of Famer – The Jamestown Sun

JAMESTOWN — Slowly one by one, the Jamestown High School Hall of Fame has been putting in phone calls to members of the Schmeichel family.

Don Schmeichel was the one who fielded call number three.

“I felt very honored and blessed,” Schmeichel said. “I was kind of like, geez, why me? but then I started looking back at it and I guess I did have a pretty good high school career being part of either a team championship or an individual championship in three different sports.

“I was pretty blessed and fortunate to have that opportunity and compete in multiple sports. It was pretty exciting.”

Schmeichel along with fellow Jamestown High School grads, Bryan Flam and Morgan (Dale) Blaskowski, are the three former JHS athletes who were named to the JHS Hall of Fame Class of 2022.

On Sept. 15, there will be a meet and greet social at 5 p.m. where the inductees will be introduced.

The following day, the inductees will attend the 2022 Homecoming Pep Rally at Jerry Meyer Arena and take part in the homecoming parade. The Hall of Fame Class of 2022 introduced at halftime of the JHS Homecoming game. A social at the Elks Club will follow the game.

Schmeichel was a five-season letter winner in cross country. He was a top-5 runner for all four years of high school. As a senior, he won seven meets and finished second at the EDC meet.

“Any time you can compete at a high level, it’s exciting,” Schmeichel said. “Sports has taught me a lot of things that I’ve brought into my career. That love to win, hate to lose mentality sticks with you forever.”

The standout runner earned all-conference honors in 1988 and ’89. In 1988 he earned all-state honors and led his team to a state championship title. He was the team captain in 1989.

Schmeichel’s father, Russ, coached him during his cross-country career.

Russ was a huge contributor to the Blue Jay and Jamestown running community. He coached track and field and cross-country in Jamestown for 32 years from 1974 to 2006. He was named state high school coach of the year in 1977.

“When your dad is a track and field and cross country coach, you don’t really have a choice but to be in those two sports,” Schmeichel said with a chuckle. “When I was a little kid I remember going to all of the meets. I would hop on the bus and go with the team.

“Growing up around it, you just really gain an appreciation for the sport.”

Russ coached his now hall-of-famer son, and the duo helped to lead the Blue Jay cross-country team to a slew of state titles.

Russ was inducted into the JHS HoF in 2017 along with his daughter and Don’s younger sister, Jennifer.

“It’s no surprise my sister made it in,” Schmeichel said of the family hall of fame inductions. “She had a fantastic career and I was kind of used to following in her shadows.

“It took me until my sophomore year until I could beat her. When you are freshman and your little sister is a seventh grader and she can beat you in the 800, that’s a little motivation right there too I guess.”

Schmeichel’s mother, Carol, has not yet gotten a call from Jim Roaldson regarding her induction into the hall of fame but she stays active in whatever way she can, running the occasional marathon …….
