Allegiant Stadium

For a city that attracts many out-of-town events and generally has agnostic venue aesthetics, there is no denying that Las Vegas’ $1.9 billion Allegiant Stadium is home to the Raiders. Black and silver is everywhere, including on many sponsors’ signage, as well as the huge 3D-printed torch homage to the late Al Davis and a unique black façade. The stadium features an ETFE roof and a retractable, natural grass field that has the ability to move out of the stadium in its entirety from one end of the venue so that the grass can get sunlight. Allegiant hosted numerous events during its first 1 1/2 years, including the NFL Pro Bowl, Pac-12 Championship Game, Concacaf Gold Cup and WWE SummerSlam, which set an indoor attendance record as a sold-out crowd of 51,326 fans attended.

Climate Pledge Arena

The $1.15 billion project was more complex than probably any North American stadium or arena, owing to the tight footprint of the site and the engineering undertakings: preserving the roof, propping it up (44 million pounds), then building a new arena beneath it. Home to the NHL Seattle Kraken and WNBA Seatle Storm, the venue’s naming-rights deal with Amazon supports environmental sustainability efforts and is backed up with substance inside. The hockey ice is made from collected rainwater; no gas is used in the arena; a considerable amount of energy is created from renewable sources, including on-site solar; and the venue features a lush and vivid indoor living wall. Also, the Kraken pays for public transportation vouchers to offset the last major environmental impact obstacle for venue operators (and the hardest to control) — fans’ method of transportation to sports events.

Footprint Center

Home to the Phoenix Suns and Mercury, the 30-year-old arena underwent a $250 million transformation, adding 70,000 square feet of new amenity space and repurposing a former 40,000-square-foot practice facility into a new three-level club and courtside suites. The arena features cool new social areas, including a speakeasy and a tiki bar, as well as the largest sports bar in Arizona — 60 feet in length and open to all fans in the building. The arena benefits from a partnership with Verizon that has made the 5G-enabled arena very tech-forward. And in a first for Arizona, FanDuel opened a sportsbook at the arena that has an exterior entrance and is accessible from the concourse during the game. Through a naming-rights deal with Footprint, which makes plant-based, biodegradable products, there is a commitment to convert to a plastic-free arena.

SoFi Stadium

Impressive in scale and size and unparalleled in North American history, SoFi is essentially a $5 billion entertainment complex (stadium, pavilion and theater) positioned beneath a high-tech cover, a novel concept that has some ingenious efficiency aspects, including helping to cool the venue. The ETFE roof, barely porous to water, creates an indoor/outdoor effect that’s far better than a true indoor stadium. The stadium has a unique programmable LED roof that, because of its location in the flight path of Los Angeles International Airport, becomes an advertising board to tens of thousands of passengers that fly over the venue every day. After its inaugural …….
